“Fotolia” requires neither examination nor documents, in fact it requires nothing – just register there and start working! It’s the ideal microstock for starters: it lets you learn the basics of the stock business, understand the processes of attribution, uploading works and their acceptance, study the minimum criterions. But, unfortunately, this site won’t bring you much money – it belongs to the 2nd division of microstocks, as well as “Dreamstime”. Along with photos “Fotolia” offers for sale vector drawings in the standard EPS graphics format and videos.
This microstock is the most loyal in terms of acceptance. The pictures that were denied by “Shutterstock”, “iStockphoto” and “Dreamstime” can easily enrich the data bank of “Fotolia”. But don’t relax: along with expansion of this data bank, the quality requirements gradually increase.
The important feature of “Fotolia” is that after getting ranks you’ll be able to set prices for your pictures yourself.
“Dreamstime”
“Dreamstime” is somewhat similar to “Fotolia”: there is no examination required for beginning selling your works; it also belongs to the 2nd echelon of microstocks and it’s also good for learning the basics of the stock business. But again, unfortunately, you’ll be able to earn much money only once you have a big, presentable portfolio.
The notability of “Dreamstime” is in "Editors' choice" and "Editorial images" features. The first means that while accepting your pictures a reviewer can mark those he likes the most as “Editor’s choice”. Those pictures will appear in separate columns in your portfolio and on the main page of the site.
“Editorial images” are the reportage photos which don’t need the model’s release. For example, some big event took place in your city, you found yourself in the right place at the right time and managed to capture it, but you don’t have the models’ releases. These pictures will be needed all the same and will appear in the editorial section of the site (the similar one “Shutterstock” has).
“Shutterstock”
Perhaps it is the best microstock. The picture sale on it is realized through subscription; you’ll get from 25 to 38 cent for a download depending on your rank. But there are tons of pictures sold on that site.
For registration you need the scan of your international passport (as ideally) or, for example, your country's passport scan + the scan of your plastic card. Also you can try to use your international driving license – in fact the site needs a document which contain your initials typed in Latin.
Then you’ll have to pass an exam consisting of 10 tasks – they can require from you 3D, vector pictures or photographs. In case of fail you’ll be given a month for thinking over before the next try. The condition of passing this exam is 7 accepted works of 10.
Unlike choosing the standard way of the stocker: “Fotolia” -> “Dreamstime” -> “iStockphoto”-> “Shutterstock” at last, when you start from “Shutterstock” you’ll at once begin earning good money and you’ll feel no disappointment – on the contrary, you’ll have a motivation to do more and better. And then you’ll start to move on, adding to your “Shutterstock” earnings the money earned on minor microstocks.
Another feature that differs “Shutterstock” from its competitors is the payment system. If on other photo banks you earn the minimum sum, then order and get it, “Shutterstock” pays you once in a month. The default minimum payment is 100 $, but you can change it to 75 $. It means that if during the calendar month you earn more than that minimum, at the beginning of the next month “Shutterstock” will pay you the balance, if not – you can save up the rest during the next month.
The search system on “Shutterstock” is made by the principal of two sortings – “new” first, and then “popular”. When your work is added to “Shutterstock’s” base, it appears in the “new” sorting and later is gradually moved down by newer pictures. But while remaining in this sorting it starts being sold and the number of sales defines its “popularity”. Consequently, the more sales on the first days, the higher position gets your picture in the “popular” sorting, and the sales will continue. This algorithm is much easier than the “relevances” of other microstocks, and especially than the “iStockphoto’s” “Best Match”. And just thanks to this model new pictures on “Shutterstock” are sold well and don’t have to make slow progress during a half year.
“iStockphoto”
“iStockphoto” is the eldest microstock and is the representative of the biggest ones. It’s very demanding to the quality of works offered for sale and has an exclusive, very developed bank of pictures. During long years of the site’s existing a search algorithm of “iStockphoto” (“Best Match”) has developed so much that at the moment it considers the relevance of each separate word – no other photo banks have that feature. Moreover, this search algorithm considers many other values that affect the final offer of pictures to a customer. As a result of the search a customer will choose from the pictures of best quality (thanks to the strict picture verification) and the most relevant ones (thanks to the search algorithm’s complexity).
On this microstock the exclusive program is very developed: the site offers its authors not to sell pictures on other microstocks, and as a gratitude it gives some bonuses: quick verification, higher payment, higher positions on the search and other joys. All of it let “iStockphoto” set higher prices than its competitors.
But everything has its disadvantages: it’s hard for newcomers to win through on this microstock. You can upload a nice portfolio but not have a decent payoff. It is said about “iStockphoto”: “Harness long - ride fast”. The law percent of payments to authors (from 20% for the inefficient and to 40% for the efficient ones) is smoothed by high picture prices.
